More Power Computer Follow up

It is born! More Power Computers Delivered my new computer last Friday. Yes I said delivered. I had a large amount of data that needed to be transferred to the new computer. I arranged to have one of the IT Techs deliver my new computer and perform the data transfer. It was worth the minimal fee associated with this service as it went off without a hitch. When the new computer was fired I virtually had a duplicate computer. After some program downloading all my settings, E-mails and contacts in Microsoft Office were as I left them on my old computer. All my pictures and music were there, amazing! All my documents and files from building Joomla Business Website Designs were all intact. A new employee named Bob with whom I have never met prior to this service call because he is a new IT Tech with More Power Computers was fantastic. Both in his knowledge base and his professionalism he made a terrific impression.

In my previous Blog Post called More Power Computers dated May 9 2009 I had mentioned the customer support sometimes needed with computers. My new computer was spec’d out with high end video and audio cards. The video card was found to be defective as it was not performing properly. This I have to say is no fault of More Power Computers as it of course a third party product. It was to be delivered on s the 21st of May. Now if I had purchased a Dell or other name brand computer I would been left with a warranty issue that would of been resolved only after much effort and frustration. Even though it was not their fault or ultimate responsibility More Power Computers took it upon themselves to rectify this problem. Instead of just ordering a new video card they sent a employee to Portland Oregon to get a new one! To make a long story short the new card was back in their shop and installed on Friday the 22nd of May. My computer was delivered the same day. The technician stayed till around 7:00 PM making sure all was fine and the data transfer was complete and working properly.

This experience with More Power Computers both on the decision to contract with them for my new computer and the data transfer and setup only reinforces my convictions of working with a local computer company. I am both very happy with both the computer and more importantly the terrific computer service and customer support that was delivered.

As a professional business website designer and business owner I highly endorse More Power Computers. Well it is time once again to upgrade my computer to a newer faster design. As a Professional Website Designer I am at the point that I needed three screen capability. I also wanted more speed and memory as I keep a lot of data on my Computer.

First of all I have to say I learned a long time ago that when considering a new computer purchase leaning to a brand name is not always the best choice. What I mean by that is there are two major factors to take into consideration when purchasing a new computer that a locally designed and built computer offers.

1. Purchase Price. I have personally found that having a computer built to your specifications will cost less than a comparable computer offered by a name brand company. What I mean by this is that for your money you usually get more in a computer built by a local computer company.
2. Customer Support. I can guarantee that if your new computer is designed and built by a reputable computer company you will get better customer support if the need ever arises. How many times have we all needed some customer support from a product we have purchased and ended up talking to someone who barely understands English after spending a hour waiting to get ahold of someone. In this day and age large companies out source their customer support to people in India or other non-English speaking country. My fiance has a Dell computer. One she purchased prior to us meeting! Her brother also has a Dell. Trying to get customer support to help with anything is like pulling eye teeth. Not to mention for what they have in a computer, they spent way to much money. Enough said!

Being a Website Designer and Internet Marketing Guru does not make me a computer expert. Since the conception of LongviewBiz.com I have relied on More Power Computers in Rainier Oregon for all my computer needs be it parts or IT work or repair. I have to say I have always been extremely satisfied with them. Mike, one of the owners has always came through with help when ever it was needed. Norman who is one of their computer repairmen is one of the finest IT people I have ever come across. He knows how to make a computer come alive! So it was a logical choice to contact More Power Computers when my new computer was in the design stage. Andrew has been very helpful with the design and advising me as to what I really wanted to fulfill my needs.

My new Computer is designed and ordered now. Like having a new baby I anxiously wait its arrival!

While I was in Kauai Hawaii earlier this month I came across a terrific T-Shirt Shop in a Mall called Coconut Market Place. The strip mall is located just outside of Kapaa Kauai. Owned by a very nice gentleman Larry Gibbons.

This place is fantastic as they have the most unique T-Shirts I have ever seen. I travel quite a bit and being a T-shirt fan I have been bitten a few times by low quality shirts that shrink 20% the first time you wash them. Not here, Poi Pounder T-Shirts are quality through and through.

Kauai Hawaii Vacation Rentals and Cottages

I have been to Hawaii, Kauai to be exact 3 times in the last year and a half. I started off with staying at a plush corporate resort. I had a terrific time but a month ago I found some really inexpensive airfares on Hawaiian  Airlines and decided to have a quick trip to Hawaii to take advantage of them. Along with my budget Vacation to Kauai I had to shop for a car and a place to stay. I decided to shop for a Cottage or other Vacation Rental in Kauai. From previous trips to Hawaii I found a terrific little town called Kapaa. It is in the most ideal location because it is close to everything and in the middle of the island. After further investigation and web surfing I came across Fern Grotto Inn, owned by Paul Juma and his beautiful family. It consists of three Cottages and a home he offers to tourists as their vacation rental in Kauai.

After talking to Paul following several e-mails I felt it was what we were looking for in our vacation rental. We booked out stay and were very excited to be staying in a cottage rather than a mega resort. Our experience was exceptional. Our Cottage, The River Cottage was everything it was represented to be. It was quiet and quaint. It was furnished very comfortably. We stayed 10 days and I wish it were 20!

I have to finish this story with the input that Paul, the owner is very professional. For example we were charged a $200.00 deposit against damage with the promise to return it within a week after checking out. I had completely forgot about it until I got a e-mail saying he had returned it to my account. I would recommend this Kauai Vacation Cottage and Rental getaway to anyone seeking to grab some relax and enjoy time.

I was recently talking to a prospective advertising customer that owns a Funeral Home in Longview Washington (WA) and the subject of Funeral Insurance came up when they said they sold Insurance that covers Funeral and other expenses when you pass away. California Asking For Money From Federal Government

This is just a quick post in response to CNN’s story published today October 3, 2008. It seems to be that the state needs additional funds to operate their schools, police department, and other social services.

I am probably going to get booed out of the concert hall here but maybe their is a lesson to be learned here. California has one of the largest illegal immigrant populations if not the largest in the country. Further more the state of California is also one of the most liberal states in the union. Maybe if they obeyed our federal immigration laws and moved to get the illegal immigrants off the shirt tails of hard working legal residents, maybe their coffers might not be so dry.

This is just a thought, but could we all learn a little from this?

Guse’s Gourmet Coffee Roasting and Coffee Shop

Guse’s Gourmet Coffee is located in downtown Longview Washington at 1208 Commerce Avenue. A quaint little coffee shop in a building built in the early nineteen hundreds. A beautiful building that defies its age as it has been exceptionally maintained.

This Longview Washington Coffee Shop got its start in 1986 when Ken Guse retired from Weyerhaeuser. Ken wanted something to do in his retirement and was looking for a job when he met Alberto Miranda who was from Costa Rica. Alberto had a history and education in the coffee business. More so he had solid connections in Costa Rico and in other locals that grew high quality coffee beans. Ken and Alberto founded a good friendship and business alliance. Ken Guse learned to roast coffee in a coffee roaster that he himself built with Albertos help. The business got off the ground roasting coffee for locals in the Kelso/Longview Washington area. Ken Guse owned and operated the business until 2006 when his daughter Georgia took over the daily operations. Ken still has a hand in the coffee roasting business and visits daily to meet with some of his friends and enjoy a terrific cup of coffee in the morning.

Today Georgia Guse operates the business much the same way her father did. This gourmet coffee shop only uses organic coffee beans of high quality. I spent almost two hours talking to Georgia and walked away with a new found respect for quality coffee and what goes into it and more so what dictates what is considered a quality coffee. I also learned some interesting facts that were both enlightening and reinforcing in my appreciation of a good cup of coffee.

• A medium roast coffee has more caffeine than a dark roast. When roasting coffee beans from the time a bean is in its medium roast condition to when it reaches a dark roast a lot of oils and caffeine evaporates form the beans.
• When you think of coffee you think of what we see on television, plantation style. Quality coffee beans are grown in the shade of a treed canopy. This ensures the beans ripen slower and develop a richer smoother taste. Grown plantation style is good if you want to maximise the output of the coffee bushes. But when a coffee bean ripens too fast it gets bitter and does not have the time to develop a rich, smooth taste and aroma that is associated with gourmet coffee beans.
• According to coffee connoisseur’s when a coffee bean is grown with insecticides and artificial fertilizers they impart a taste into the bean. Guse’s Gourmet Coffee only uses organic beans grown in organic certified farms. A farm can only be certified after being insecticide free for five years.
• There are basically two types of coffee beans grown. Arabica and Robusto. Robusto beans are easily to detect as they are round. Robusto beans are of a lesser quality than Arabica coffee beans. By nature Robusto beans have a bitter taste.
• After a coffee bean is roasted, it has a shelf life of only twelve to fourteen days. After that the oils in the beans start to evaporate and it goes essentially stale.
• The practice of putting coffee in the refrigerator does little good in preserving the freshness of coffee. In fact when you roast and grind fresh beans you want the coffee to breath so the flavor and oils are readily available when you brew your coffee.

Today Georgia continues in the tradition and care delivering quality gourmet coffee not only to discerning consumers but to some of the Kelso/Longview Washington area’s finest restaurants. Government In Business With Private Commerce?

President Bush and his administration plan for “The Bailout” is taking shape. The 700 billion dollar financial rescue as congress is still working out the details. The Senate Democrats proposal is for our Government to hold ownership in the companies they are Bailing out. A provision being offered by the Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, who by the way is a Democrat would require companies who sell assets to Uncle Sam to give the government shares in that company. In a nutshell the plan is for the government to buy up assets and then sell them at a profit.

I as a citizen of this country have a few questions and concerns of my own that I have not seen as addressed.

1. Why is our Government willing to help the big businesses out like this while ignoring the rest of the population? Where is the government when small businesses are in trouble? If the government is so willing to help out big business, where are they when the mom and pop family businesses are having hard times such as the trucking companies when fuel prices went crazy? Where were they when the lumber companies were having hard times?
2. My next question is since when was our government a for profit agency? Are we to be led into a situation where we are paying our mortgages to the government. I believe this is closely approaching socialism. Our government in my humble opinion has no business interfering with private commerce. This is a capitalistic society where we are free to conduct business. What will happen to our laws and more importantly our lawmakers and politicians when the government is intermingled in private business?

Internet Advertising and Online Marketing is the most cost effective form of Advertising

There are several avenues of Advertising medias at your disposal as a company trying to get your message out in front of the public view. Unfortunately times are changing, all the traditional avenues are on the decline in performance. That is a fact. More so the traditional forms of Advertising are also the most expensive. The Internet is coming of age and it definitely is here to stay. Let me take the time here to outline the traditional forms of Advertising and lay to rest why they are on the decline in value.

Television has lost its shine as a popular form of Advertisingbecause it is getting harder to find the viewers you are targeting. Ten years ago all we had were a few channels to view. Now we have hundreds and it is getting harder by the minute to target you audience. More so we now have Tivo! Now viewers can record their programs they choose to view and also chose to view them at their leisure. How many times have you recorded a show and when viewing it fast forwarded through the commercials? I do on a daily basis!

Newspaper Advertising. I am not going to take up too much time on this subject. Just Google http://newsosaur.blogspot.com/2008/09/newspaper-sales-fall-record-3b-in-6-mos.html This will tell you how newspaper advertising is on a serious decline. Why? Simply people are not reading the newspaper anymore in the numbers they once did. What happened to the telegraph when the telephone came to be? You got it. The Internet is the resource of information in this day and age. I personally think in the very near future the larger newspapers will be folding for good and selling their presses to third world countries.

Yellow pages. When was the last time you or a family member used the phone book? I can do five to six searches on the Internet in the time it takes me to go get the phone book and look up a piece of information.  It truly is barbaric and outdated. Even the phone companies are getting on the band wagon of using the Internet as a form of Advertising. We have all heard of Dex online, this is a overpriced online form of Advertising. In fact it has little web traffic as it is not well received in conception and delivery. Here are some statistics from the Nielsen Ratings.

There are basically two ways of getting your company into the public view.

1. Contact a Website Designer to Design a effective Website. This is a terrific way of advertising as once the website is done and marketed properly it is working around the clock.
2. Advertise in a Business Directory, This is also a terrific way to market your business as a good Business Directory markets your business for you. Business Directories if they are well done have the marketing end of it down and can get you in the public view well. They also have the Internet traffic to display your company to even customers that are not even looking for you! Keep in mind there are two forms of advertising, point of sale meaning when running a ad you expect to see a return immediately. The second is to keep your name and the services and the products you sell in the public view all the time. Name recognition is more than half of Advertising.

Now how do we sum this all up and how does it apply to Advertising your Business in the Kelso/Longview Washington area? Well there is a quote I heard a while back and I may not get it 100% accurate but it goes like this “If you want to know who your competition in business is go to the Internet, your customers do” A major mistake that many business owners do is when we have a business market like we now have business owners and managers cut back on advertising. It should be easy to find the information you want in its contents. A Business Website is a valuable source of information. The purpose of a Business Website is to give your prospective customers information about yourself, your company, and the services or products you are offering to your customers. I started studying Website Design and Website Search Engine Optimization and then I figured out my current Webmaster not only was amateur, but took my money and delivered a Website that was basically useless. Anyone can Design a Website that will show up in the Search Engines when you type in the company name. Even a out of the can Website you can get from some Webmasters will do that. A properly Designed Website that is Search Engine Optimized should show up in the Search Engines for the Keywords that are relevant to the services or products you are offering your customers. Plans vary from Insurance Company to the next. They may use different co payment systems. Co payment means when you have a doctors visit the amount you have to pay upfront prior to treatment.

In almost all Health Insurance Plans you have to pay in full if you recieve service not covered by your plan, allways check with your provider prior to treatment.

Waiting periods for pre-existing conditions

Most Health Insurance Policies have waiting periods for pre-existing conditions that you may have prior to purchasing the Insurance Plan. Nine months is the norm. If you may be switching Insurance Plans, there is a credit you may receive when signing up for your new policy. Mount St. Helens Revisited

Mount St. Helens prior to the eruption of May 18, 1980 was 9,677 feet tall at its peak. This made it only the fifth largest peak in Washington. The top of the mountain rises 5,000 feet above its base. At its base it is 6 miles across, and the pre-eruption timberline was 4 miles around.

Mount St. Helens is located in Skamania County, but the best access is through Cowlitz County. Longview and Kelso Washington are known as the “gateway to Mount St. Helens“. The closest community to Mount St. Helens is Cougar which is 11 miles form the peak. The forest surrounding Mount St. Helens is the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

George Vancouver has the distinction of being the first European to document seeing Mount St. Helens on May 19, 1792. At that time he was charting the area of Puget Sound. Mount St. Helens was not officially named until October 20, 1792 when he saw it as his ship was passing the mouth of the Columbia River.

The Lewis and Clark expedition later saw Mount St. Helens when they came up the Columbia River in 1805 and 1806. There descriptions of the conditions of the Sandy river, which is near Portland Oregon, suggested that it had recently erupted. Later documentation suggests that Mount St. Helens erupted in 1800.

Mount St. Helens is a young Volcano by mountain standards, developing only 40,000 years ago. Streams that getting their start end up in the Columbia River via three major rivers that drain the valleys surrounding Mount St. Helens. The three rivers are the Toutle River, the Kalama River, and the Lewis River. Mount St. Helens receives a average of 140 inches of water comprised of rain and snow in a year.

Mount St. Helens Eruption History

Mount St. Helens is a potentially very active and quite dangerous volcano. During the last 500 years or so it has had 4 major eruptions, and numerous eruptions of lesser proportions. Two of the major eruptions  only spanned two years apart. One of the largest documented eruptions of Mount St. Helens was in 1480 A.D. when it erupted with a force 5 times greater than the eruption of May 18, 1980.

The eruption of Mount St. Helens came as no surprise as it is the most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range. It has been studied more closely and thoroughly than any volcano on earth. Its oldest known eruption deposits have been found to be over 50,000 years old and has has a intermittently active life since.

The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens was preceded by over two months of activity that was signified by more than 10,000 earthquakes. Hundreds of small steam emissions were recorded. What is better known as the north bulge  continued to grow. What triggered the eruption of Mount St. Helens is a earthquake of 5.1 magnitude. Within seconds of the earthquake, the largest landslide in recorded history took place. The entire north flank bulge slid down the mountain. Temperatures in side the blast reached 300 degrees Celsius. Minutes later the plume reached 19 kilometers in the sky, being carried across much of the western United States.

Some Basic Medicare Information

After my Fiance’s father had a stroke while covered by Medicare Insurance, he and his wife found out they did not qualify for any extended in home care. At that time we all did some research into Medicare Insurance and found out that those types of benefit’s were not available to him due to the type of Medicare he was signed up for. We also found out that it costs around $4,000.00 to have an in home nurse come in and take care of him while his wife was at work. I thought I would compile a short version of the different types of Medicare Insurance coverage and policies available.

The Original Medicare Insurance Programs

1. Part A, If you are receiving Social Security at the time you become eligible for Medicare and if you are qualified for Part A and not paying a premium you will automatically be signed up for Part A and Part B. Three months before you are eligable for Medicare Benifits you will receive Medicare Insurance information and your card. In the scenario you are not receiving Social Security Benefits when you become eligable for Medicare Insurance you must apply for benefits. Applying for Medicare is easy and can be accomplished by going to your Local Social Security Administration office (SSA). In the Longview Washington area the address is 1145 14Th Avenue, Longview Washington 98632. You are eligable to enroll three months prior to turning sixty five years old.
2. Part B, Medicare Medical Insurance or commonly known as Part B, helps pay for Physicians services and outpatient care. It is also designed to pay for necessary services and most supplies that Part A does not cover. Hence extended in home care. Note Part B is supplemental and optional and has a premium attached to it. If you are Qualified for Part A, you are also qualified for Part B.

Supplementing Original Medicare Insurance

Be advised if not warned there are other ways available to fill the gaps that Medicare does not cover. Real Estate Sales Good June and July

Home sales are rebounding according to the article written by Andre Stepanowsky in the Longview Daily News in last Sundays paper. This was coincided with a firm offer my fiance received on Friday. Vicki has been trying to get her “extra” home sold for over a year with no results till she listed it with Coldwell Banker, Flaskerud Realty. The Real Estate Agent she has been using is Liesel Filkowski. She has had the listing for only a few months.

According to article in the Daily News the median price of homes that sold in Cowlitz County rose to $199,425.00. This was a rise of about $4,000.00 over homes sold last year at this time. Real Estate sales are still lagging behind last years numbers. the surplus of homes on the market is still large. There are not a lot of buyers out there. Homes in the higher price range see to be moving faster. According to the listing service 64 homes sold in July in Cowlitz County. Down about 30% from last year at this time. This year 419 Homes have been sold so far, down significantly over the numbers of 2007 when 614 Homes were sold through July.

This means that the Insurance Company will have a adjuster, with your help determine what it will cost to replace the items at today’s value. When this is all calculated into the equation the Real Estate Agent comes up with a good idea what your home will bring on the market. With that in hand they will discuss with you what your asking price will be.

Once an Agent and you come up with the asking price the Real estate Agent will usually have a meeting with the Real Estate Broker to come up with a game plan as to how your house will be marketed. I was reading a article in the Longview Daily Newspaper yesterday and it gave me reason to think about what kind of vehicles we will driving in a few years. With fuel prices rising and no end in sight, how long will it be worth it to drive a gas guzzler no matter how “cool” it may be.

I am fifty years old and have had my share of hot rods in the past. From the horsepower machines, to sleek BMW’s as my income rose into that income bracket. I purchased a new Jeep Commander eight months ago , I wanted a big V-8. Had I known the future as far as gas prices go, the Jeep would of gotten a quick glance. I probably would of gotten a Toyota SUV. Now I wish I had. I filled it up the other day from empty and it was near eighty bucks!

I see the kids driving around in the jacked up four wheel drives in town and knowing they are only getting ten miles to the gallon best, I wonder how long that will last. I imagine the resale values have got to be falling like rocks. Who wants a hot rod when it serves no practical purpose. But it looks “cool” How much is “cool” worth at four fifty a gallon for fuel.

We Are Continuing To Lose Jobs

The Department of Labor is now reporting a net loss of 62,000 jobs in the month of June nationally. May brought in similar losses in jobs. The unemployment rate is still at 5.5%. Experts forcast  the unemployment rate would be 5.4% There are currently 390,000 unemployment insurance claims that are active, nearing the 400,000 mark that signifies a recession.

The loss of jobs in the monthly report from the Department of Labor is concentrated in the Manufacturing and Construction sectors of business. Those two areas of business have been badly hit by the current economic situation. But those two sectors are not the only areas that are seeing a decline. Job losses by Retailers are at 7,500 and professional services cut 51,000 jobs. Believe it or not even the government cut 29,000 jobs! According to Lakshman Achuthan, the managing director of the Economic Cycle Research Institute, These numbers are proof of the fact we as Americans are in a recession.

I am starting to rethink this being a Republican! I am wondering if Mr. Bush is leading this country in the wrong direction. I do believe that this Iraq war is crazy. Viet Nam all over again with no perceivable gain. I have to wonder what good all that money would do if it were spent on us as citizens, and this country rather than attempting to be the worlds police. Now where does that leave us here in the Longview Washington area, I don’t Know. I do know since the mills and factories have shut down or cut back it has been significantly harder for people to get a job. And the jobs that are available are not the secure jobs we once had, or the pay is not what it once was. To acquire a job a lot of people commute to Portland or Vancouver to work. With fuel prices the way they are that is not such a lucrative proposition it once was. I think I will put in a green house! Maybe a few chickens! Something to hedge this situation. A Quick Glance at Kelso Washington

Kelso Washington was little more than Timber, and a few Creeks and Rivers until 1847 when a Pioneer named Pete Crawford decided to homestead the area. Today Kelso is the second largest city in Cowlitz County. It is also the County seat.

The Cost Of Fuel Changing How We Live

The cost of fuel in the US as it is in the Longview area is a major topic now. But I think it is not being fully explained to the public. The media is covering the cost of gasoline at the pump to the average consumer, but neglecting how the cost of Diesel is effecting our every day life and the rise in cost of everything.

Diesel has climbed over a dollar in the last twelve months. Truck drivers, and Trains consume deisel and in a nutshell it is costing a great deal more to shop products and goods than it did a year ago. Ironicly, the cost of shiping products does not go up at the same rate as the cost of fuel. There is no end in sight to the rise of fuel costs, and unfortunatly also to the rise in Groceries, Clothes, Building Supplies, everything we consume. Its no secret that everything that ends up at the store gets there by way of Trucks.

What is a real shame is that another area of important news is that there are alot of Owner Operator, family Trucking Companys going out of business due to the rise in fuel costs. This is the backbone of our economy and the government seems to feel it is not a issue, as do the media. I feel something needs to be done here as this is a serious issue that is of national interest.

The cost of flying is going out of site also as is the count of Airlines going out of business. The news is that the Airlines are going to start charging for extra baggage. Everyone whines about it but they need to do something to cover the additional costs of fuel.

I wonder where we as Americans will be economically this time next year. Could it be worse? Who knows but I feel if something does not happen quickly we are not going to be able to live the lifestyle we do now. Not to mention what it will cost businesses to operate.

A Restaurant A Far Cry from Longview Washington

Picture this, 8:30 PM in the evening, 75 degrees with a 10 MPH tradewind blowing through your hair. Sitting in a open air restaurant among Tiki Torches and a wonderful Koi Pond. This is Keioke’s Paradise in Poipu, Kauai, Hawaii, a long way from Kelso or Longview Washington.

My bride to be and I sat down to have a terrific meal as we heard locally it was a wonderful experience and wanted to give it a shot ourselves. As I descibed in the preceding paragraph the atmosphere was unreal. We were seated within ten minutes of our reservation time which in this day and age we both thought was outstanding. We were started off with a cocktail and a outstanding mix of sourdough breads and sweet breads and whipped butter. I ordered the Ahi Tuna which was grilled to perfection and served with a terrific fruit salza. Vicki, my wife to be, ordered the Macadamia nut encrusted, Pesto Shrimp. I tried it and it was out of this world.

When combining the tropical atmosphere of Keoki’s Paradise, with the outstanding service and meal, I have to say it will be one of my more memorable meals. At least besides my first meal at Marine Corps Boot Camp! But that is another story in its self. This meal truly made traveling to Hawaii from Longview, Kelso worth while. Longview to Waimea Canyon

Oh My God! If there is one thing you have got to have on the list if you should ever go to Kauai Hawaii is to drive to the Waimea Canyon. We are staying in Poipu and it is about a half hour drive to the bottom of the hill that takes you up to the top of the canyon. The drive is beautiful, with twisty curvy roads that go forever. There are four lookouts starting half way up. Truly words are not enough to discribe this wonder. It is a canyon that rivals the Grand Canyon and out does it in beauty. This is a part of earth that has not been touched by man. There are turnouts on this road that you can stop at and look out and over this canyon. We are talking 3500 feet straight down into time. You truly walk away being blown away. Travel- Longview Washington to Kauai

Well I have finally had it with our weather here in good old Longview Washington. It was time for some sunshine and nice warm breezes! My fiance and I decided a week in Hawaii was in store to warm up the old bones and to get a new outlook on life. Winter had seemed to be never ending this year. Traveling to a exotic hidaway seemed to be the answer so we decided to trade Longview Washington for Kauai Hawaii.

We decided it was best to be dropped off at a hotel close to the Portland airport as we had a 6:30 am flight to San Francisco. My fiance’s son Joey dropped us off at the Fairfied Inn on Airport Way. We checked in and did our best to call it a early night.

Let me start with I made a huge mistake in Packing. I decided to pack light as I did not want to run the chance of loosing my luggage in route. So I packed all my clothes and toiletries in one bag, that was fine I think until the laptop went in! It ended up being around 55 lbs, mabee even 60 lbs! I have a old industrial HP laptop that has proved its self indestructable so I have never replaced it with a shiny newer version. I figured hell I don’t really care how heavy it was as it was going to on the airplane anyway. Did I mention this was going to be my carry-on? Starting to get the picture?

As it turns out upon arriving at the airport, the lines were really long. If we did not have to check in some luggage we could have gone through the electronic check in and got out seat assignments. This line was really long. So I figured I could leave Vicki in line and I could take the luggage that was to be checked in out to the sidewalk and go through the express line and we would be done. Wrong! I went through the express line and they gave me a boarding pass. Not until we were almost through security did we realize she did not have a boarding pass as I was the only one to to through the express line. As our boarding time was approaching soon we got concerned. We brought this issue to the attention of a security officer and she was kind enough to walk us to the front of the line back where we should of gone in the first place. Keep in mind I am dragging around a 60 lb bag all this time! We got on the plane finally with time to spare and was on our way to San Francisco, finally leaving the winter weather of Longview-Kelso behind.

Upon arriving in San Francisco we found out our connecting flight was, it seemed to be at the other side of the airport if not on the other side of San Francisco! Everything went fine from this point forward. Moral of the story to this point, check in your heavy baggage! My arms and shoulders were so sore from the strap hanging on them, my arms felt like I just worked out all day, and I did.

Upon arriving in Kauai it was like night and day from our good old Longview-Kelso area we call home. It was a nice 85 degrees with a nice trade wind blowing. Heaven. We checked into the Kauai Sheraton Resort in Poipu. I highly recommend this resort as I have stayed here once before. Check in was painless. I used a Travel Agent that I have been using for years and it really pays off. When you use a travel agency to book your itinirary, airfare and accommidations, I find things go a lot more smoothly. I have used the “cheap flight dot com” route before and will never go back. Everything usually gets screwed up.

After checking in we decided to go get somthing to eat so down to the on premises restaurant we went. I had a Kalua Pork sandwich and Vicki had a awesome Chicken BLT. Isn’t it funny how when you go out to eat with someone, what they order always looks better than what you got? It was. When we were done eating we went back to our room, keep in mind it was around 3:30 Hawaii time. I thought it sounded good to just lay down for a while to relax, 12 hours later I woke up. Well Water is in the Future for Longview Washington

The City Council has decided that our water in the future will be coming from a well tapping into a deep aquifer below the Mint Farm Industrial Park. This was decided Thursday with a 6-1 vote. A $280,600.00 contract will be awarded to Tacoma engineering firm, Robinson, Noble and Saltbrush to design and oversee the construction of one main production well and up to eight “sentinel” wells which will monitor the water quality at the mint farm. Drilling and construction will cost $670,000.00, that portion of the project must go out to bid.

The other option was to upgrade and refurbish the Reginal Water Plant on Fisher’s Lane. That plant would of cost $46,000,000.00 to complete that project. The council was strongly advised against refurbishing the Fisher Lane plant because it is continuing to wear out from volcanic silt from Mount St. Helens. The silt left over from Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption is the culprit for the continuing wear and maintenance issues that are on going. City engineers estimate it would cost Longview’s citizens over a twenty year period $26,000,000.00 more to keep the Fisher’s Lane Plant operational. http://www.longviewbiz.com/

Growing Tomatoes in Cowlitz County Washington

Tomatoes grown here in the Northwest are some of the best tasting Tomatoes you will ever find. I think they are the most grown garden vegetable there is. Just look in the garden departments in the stores. You will find tons of varieties, and more of them than any plant attesting to their popularity.

The easy way to grow Tomatoes in this area is to start out with starter plants. Choose a few different varieties as they mature and ripen at different times, ensuring a longer season. After choosing a few varieties, choose a sunny location and plant them in a well composted and amended hole. Dig the hole at least twice as big as the root ball and add compost to the soil you return to the hole. After you plant the tomato plant, water it to pack down the soil and to remove air. Tomatoes like the soil to be at least 65 degrees. That is hard to do in the Longview and Kelso Washington area. I always plant to early and have to wait till they warm up to take off! When the Tomato plants are starting to grow make sure you have a cage available. Tomatoes are vines and like to grow in all directions. If they start to out grow the cage feel free to remove some of the branches.

Tomatoes require little maintenance to ensure a good crop. In Longview Washington and surrounding areas here in the northwest they grow like weeds. I once had a Beefsteak Tomato plant that fed three families all by its self! It was the craziest plant with a stalk that was two inches around! This is not a fishing story. Tomatoes like to be watered directly to the soil. They can develop fungusif the leaves remain wet all the time. I like to use a soaker hose. They like to be watered every other day. Tomatoes like water. Fertilize every three to four weeks. I also like to put a layer of mulch around the plant when they get larger as this helps the soil to remain wet, and adds some nutrients.

Longview and Kelso Washington Bike Sales Are Up

In Cowlitz County the Longview and Kelso Washington bike sales are up due to gas prices being so high with no end in sight. With gas over $4.00 per gallon nationwide and equally as high in Cowlitz County there is no end in sight to our gas dilemma. Gas is going to continue to rise with rumors of a gallon costing over $5.50 per gallon by the end of summer. If another hurricane hits like Katrina and knocks out a offshore well or two it could be worse, over $6.00 per gallon being very realistic.

Bob’s bike sales rose 20% in the last two months, directly coupled to the gas crunch. The longview Wal-Mart reports selling about 10 bikes a day and 40 to 50 bikes on weekends. Nationwide bike sales are up approxamatly 20% so the Longview Kelso area is on par with the rest of the nation. Service is also up, people getting there bikes up to speed, ready to commute to work.

The choices people are making in car buying decisions are changing also. The suburban’s and SUV sales are down greatly. The auto manufactures are shuting down plants that specialize in manufacturing the larger SUV’s and other gas guzzlers. I can only imagine what that is doing to the resale of preowned vehicles. Probably pretty hard to sell the big SUV’s like Cadillacs, Ford’s, Chevrolet’s, and Hummers.

My girlfriend and I have discovered this terrific Pizza Restaurant in Kelso WA. The name of this Restaurant is Saviano’s Pizzeria. It is located in Kelso WA, a little ways down from the Highlander Bowl in the same strip mall.

They have this Garlic Chicken pizza that is out of this world. It is made with a white sauce and has a hint of apricot in it. Sounds strange but I was fore warned by relatives to try it and I would be hooked. I was. I also tried the Venetian. It is your basic Italian pizza, but it is not greasy like some other pizzas I have tried.

This pizza is definitely up scale. It costs a little more than your run of the house Pizza, but the quality is outstanding. The service is great, and the atmosphere is quiet. Micro brews are on tap! They also make a Panini sandwich that is good. Here is a little bit of Pizza History that I found interesting while surfing the Web. Pizza is a baked pie with a origin of coarse coming from Italy.
